Scout Gets Eagle Rank
Wayne Benton Mattis of Boy Scout Troop 9, Chapel Hill was awarded
the Eagle Scout rank at a court of honor Sunday, Feb. 5.
More than 100 persons attended the program, held in the Episcopal Chapel
of the Cross, sponsor of the troop. Presentations for advancement were
given to 27 other scouts in the troop. Lyman Ripperton III is Scoutmaster.
The son of Mrs. George (Margaret Mattis) Knoerr of Chapel Hill, Ben
joined Troop 9 in June 1973 and has been a patrol leader and member of
the Order of the Arrow honor Camping fraternity. To qualify for the rank,
he achieved 24 merit badges and proved his scouting spirit. He also completed
a special Eagle service project, a metric education system which involved
the help of 10 other Scouts.
Ben is a member of the Chapel of the Cross and presently a student at
Episcopal High School, Alexandria, Va.
Recognized for other awards at the court of honor were: Charles Coble,
Star rank; David Forney, Ed Hask, William Hazen, Brunson Hoole, Dennis
McNamara, Steve Pannell, Shade Sanford, and Paul Spitznagel, all Second
Class rank; Kenny Ching, Elliot Curtis, John Calloway, John Harrison, Eric
Higgs, Brunson Hoole, Philip Hubbard, Bryan Hulka, Greg Rempf, Dennis Mcnamara,
John Newton, Peter Ney, Cyrus Noble, Steve Pannell, John Peno, Shade Sanford,
Oliver Steele, and Eddie Tostanoski, all Tenderfoot rank.
