Served as a captain in Army Intelligence during 1965-67 and was professor of history at Texas Christian University from 1967 to 1997, and chair of the department from 1992 to 1997. During 1969-1970 was a visiting research associate at the Smithsonian Institute. Holds the John Biggs Chair of Military History and has been at VMI since 1997.
