Troop 9 Hike and Campout
4 ­ 5 December 1999

Description

This is the description of a two day, weekend State Park camping trip. The trip will be at the South Mountains State Park south of Morganton, N.C. off NC18. Activities will include a service project and a day hike to High Shoals Falls. Weather is frequently available in abundance; pack for either wet or cold weather.

Saturday 4 Dec.  7:00 a.m.  Depart from Chapel of the Cross
4 Dec.  11:00 a.m.  Meet at South Mountains SP, Rangerís Office
4 Dec.  11:00 a.m.  Move to the group campground
4 Dec.  noon Lunch
4 Dec.  afternoon Day hike to High Shoals Falls
4 Dec.  evening Overnight at the group campground
Sunday 5 Dec.  morning Service Project
5 Dec.  1:00 p.m. Depart for Chapel Hill
5 Dec.  5:00 p.m. Arrive in Chapel Hill, Chapel of the Cross

Personal Equipment

Pack for potentially cold, wet weather. See the troop equipment list for details.

Food and Group Equipment

Food (except Saturday lunch) and equipment will be coordinated at the troop meetings by patrol. Pack a bag lunch for Saturday. Pack a lunch for Sunday that requires minimum preparation.

Messages and Emergency Contact

Telephone messages for pickup after the hike and before the troop starts home may be left by calling 933-1969.

A status message including the times that the troop starts for home and expects to arrive may be heard by calling 933-1969.

Driving Route.

Estimated travel time is three  and three quarters hours from Chapel Hill. A map of the route from Morganton is linked.

I40, NC18, SR1913, SR1924 (Old NC18), SR1901, SR1904. The exit from I40 is #105.

Drivers will leave Chapel Hill Saturday morning at 7:00 a.m. We will meet at the park ranger's office around 11:00 a.m .

Water

Reliable water is available at camp. Be sure to have 2 liters of canteen space for the Saturday day hike.
