Fall Orienteering Day Hike

13 November 1999Description
This is a one day trip of approximately two miles over land from the Johnston trust that has been acquired by the North Carolina Nature Conservancy. The trip will focus on First and Second Class orienteering and Second Class Toten-Chip requirements and will include a hike along Johnston Branch, Old Field Creek, and New Hope Creek. This tract extends approximately two miles from Whitfield Road to Mt. Sinai Road, tapering from about a mile in width to a quarter mile from north to south.
Schedule
Arrive: 9:00 a.m. Sat. 13-Nov.-99 Whitfield Road at the ìnewî road on the north side of Whitfield, ~0.6 mi from NC86, ~0.2 mi. from Turkey Farm Road, just past Dr. Fisherís pond Depart: 3:00 p.m. Turkey Farm Road at the New Hope Creek crossing, 1.3 mi. from Whitfield Road and .3 mi. from Mt. Personal Equipment
Bring a pocket knife, compass, paper, pencil, Scout Handbook (1999 edition), clip board or something to write on, a calculator is helpful but not necessary. Also bring hats, long-sleeve shirts, and sunscreen as warranted.
If you want to invest in a topographic map of the area, get the 1978 7.5 minute Chapel Hill quadrangle.
Patrol Equipment
Each patrol needs to bring a hatchet, saw, files and whetstone.
Food and Water
Pack a bag lunch, trail snacks, and a dayís worth of water (at least 4 liters). No other potable water will be available.
