Description

This is a one day trip to the Korstian Division of Duke Forest. The trip will focus on First and Second Class orienteering and Second Class Toten-Chip requirements and will include a hike through the New Hope Gorge, one of the least accessible and most beautiful stretches of Duke Forest.

Schedule

 

Arrive:	1:00 pm, Sun. 4/1/2001	Whitfield Road, the Duke Forest gate at the end of Sunrise Road (SR 1732)
	Wooden Bridge Road	Training: pacing, distances, bearings, landmarks, measuring heights.
	New Hope Gorge	Nature requirements field work. About a four mile hike.
Pickup:	5:00 p.m.	Same Duke forest gate

Telephone contact may be tried; call 593-0290. Much of the area has poor cell phone coverage.

Personal Equipment

Bring a pocket knife, compass, paper, pencil, Scout Handbook, clip board or something to write on, a calculator is helpful but not necessary. Also bring hats, long-sleeve shirts, and sunscreen as warranted.

If you want to invest in a topographic map of the area, get the 1978 7.5 minute Chapel Hill quadrangle.

Food and Water

Pack trail snacks, and a half dayís worth of water (at least 2 liters). No other potable water will be available.
