Troop 9 Hike and Campout
10 - 12 October 1998
Description
The trip is an three day camping trip at Hammocks Beach State Park on Bear
Island, a barrier island south of Bogue Inlet and offshore from Swansboro.
As our service project, we will be painting the wait station at the dock
on the island. Remember to bring old clothes for painting. There will be
time for walking on the beach, for searching for buried pirate treasure
(no metal detectors allowed), as well as structured walks with park naturalists.
Schedule
(Please note the change of departure time. Leaving earlier allows us to
take in the Saturday program "History of Bear Island.")

Messages and Trip Status
Telephone messages for pickup after the hike and before the troop starts
home may be left by calling 933-1969. A status message including the times
that the troop starts for home and expects to arrive may be heard by calling
933-1969. Personal Equipment Pack for three days of sand and surf. Pack
sensibly. It may be cold, hot, and wet. Remember that you have to carry
everything you need in one trip to the ferry and then across the island
(3/4 mile) to our campsite.
Food and Group Equipment
Food (except SaturdayÕs personal bag lunch) is a patrol responsibility.
Six patrol-prepared meals are scheduled: Saturday supper through Monday
lunch. The last meal should require minimal cleanup. Saturday lunch is
a bag lunch brought individually. Parents can coordinate meals at the Troop
meetings among each other or with staff.
Water
Water is available about a half mile from the group campsite. As always,
start with full canteens.
Driving Route
Hammocks Beach State Park is located near Swansboro, NC.

Leaving Chapel Hill take Interstate 40 east.

Take exit 364 onto NC24 south, through Warsaw to Kenansville.

Turn right onto NC50 south.

Follow NC50 to Chinquapin.

There pick up NC111 east.

Follow NC111 through Fountain to US258.

Take US258 south to Jacksonville.

From Jacksonville, take NC24 east toward Swansboro.

Watch for SR1511, Hammocks Beach Road, with a sign to Hammocks Beach State
Park.

Turn right onto SR1511. (If you overshoot, it is 2.4 miles to the Bogue
Inlet Bridge.)

At the end of SR1511, turn into the park office area.
We will wait there for the ferry to carry us to Bear Island.
