Appalachian Trail Hike
August 12 - 18, 1984
Allen Gap to The Nolichucky River

This is the description of the Troop 9 50-mile backpacking trip from August 19 through 18, 1984. The trip will be on the Appalachian Trail from Allen Gap (N.C. 208 at the Tenn. state line) to the Nolichucky River (just east of Erwin, Tenn. The trip is primarily intended for advanced troop members with experience in hiking and camping. Daily hikes will be ten to fifteen miles a day. Total distance under pack will be 51.3 miles. Altitudes will range from 1700 to 4200 ft. Maximum elevation change is 2000 ft in 0.5 miles. Temperatures may range from the 30 s F. at night to the upper 80 s.

Food buying and packing will be done during the week of July 30 - August 3. Food repackaging will be done on Sat. 8/4 from 9 till noon in the basement of The Chapel of the Cross; some help will be required of hikers.

Active aerobic training is encouraged to enhance the individual participant s enjoyment of the trip and for the advantage of the group as a whole.

Cost estimate at this time is $55 for food and transportation.

Sun. 8/12 7:00 a.m. Depart from Horace Williams House parking lot. 2:00 p.m. On trail at Allen Gap

Sat. 8/18 12:00 noon Pickup from Nolichucky River at Tenn. Rt. 36 5:00 p.m. Arrive in Chapel Hill
