Summer campers leave for a week at Raven Knob Scout Reservation on Sunday, June 23 at 11 a.m. from the Bell Tower parking lot on the UNC campus. Parents are reminded that all scouts must have updated medical forms. Contact Lyman if you have questions about the forms. Trip sheets that were distributed at the last meeting have information on what to take and directions to the camp. The Troop will return to Chapel Hill on Saturday June 29 for pick up at Chapel of the Cross between 9 and 10 a.m. We look forward to a great week of merit badge classes and advancement work for Tenderfoot through First Class ranks. |
The scouts and parents who participated in the Chapel of The Cross Spring ABC Sale helped collect over $17,000 in gross receipts. All proceeds of the sale are distributed to local charities. Thanks for the great service Scouts, and don't forget to get your service hours initialed in your Scout Book. |
Fifty miles of the Appalachian Trail through the Nantahala National Forest over a nine day period make this a good first distance trip for seasoned scouts and a memorable trip even for the most experienced. Those interested must have the scoutmaster's approval which will be based on the scout's experience and demonstrated ability. The average daily hike is around seven miles over four to seven hours. The last day will include an optional rafting trip down the Nantahala River. The trail includes some spectacular views especially at Wesser, Wayah, Albert, and Standing Indian. From these you can see the great arch where the Blue Ridge mountains fork south and east above Asheville, converging into the main body of the Appalachians again to the south and forming a portion of the North Carolina - South Carolina state line. The western line of the arch includes the Black Mountains with Mount Mitchell as well as the Pisgah Ridge with Mount Pisgah, the Shining Rock Wilderness, and Cold Mountain. To the north the high peaks of the Smokies stand out with Clingmans Dome and Mount Leconte. |
