Parent Meeting of Boy Scout Troop 9

November 13, 2001

The first item of business was a recap of the September 13 meeting by Luke Cathell.

There was a report from Sarah Mason on uniforms.  The text of the message quoted here.
"The purpose of the uniform inventory closet is to build and maintain an assortment of complete scout uniforms.  We want to encourage Troop 9 scouts to wear a full uniform when appropriate.  An inventory of used uniforms makes the process easier and less expensive for all.
I have checked over the used uniforms already owned by Troop 9.  We have an assortment of shirts, trousers and shorts available for scout use.  Many are smaller sizes.  Call me if you have a need.

I will maintain the inventory and purchase full uniforms ordered by scouts as a convenience for the Troop parents.  If you need only a patch or a uniform part.  These are available at the scout store in Raleigh, sometimes at the Belk's in South Square and in the catalog.  If you plan to buy a full uniform, let me know.  We may have some used parts that will reduce the cost.

A full uniform consists of shirt, pants, belt, socks, bolos assorted patches, shoulder loops, merit badge sash and handbook.  The approximate cost of a new uniform is $80.00 to $100.00.

Scout activity shirts or full uniforms are also available for order by adults.  The scout activity shirts are red polo-type shirts with the scout emblem embroidered over the heart.  The cost of activity shirt ranges from $18.00 to $25.00 depending on the size.

I will be going to the scout store in the next two weeks.  Let me know if you need a uniform."

The December trip is caving.

The trip is December 1 and 2.  We will leave early Saturday and stay in five cabins overnight.  The cars with persons going caving will go straight to the cave.  The few persons not caving will go directly to the cabins.  There is a trip sheet on the web.  Food for the trip is $10.00 per person and will be collected by John at departure.  There is some consideration for a second caving trip on Sunday for a small group.  This is still in the planning stage and may or may not materialize.  We will be five hours in the cave, 11:00 AM to 4:00PM.  Bill will have helmets but no lights.  Everyone must have three light sources.  At least one must be a helmet light even if it is a pen light duct taped to the helmet.  Other sources can be helmet lights or hand lights.  The third light source can even be a paraffin light or a candle with matches.

Eagle Advancement

Andy and Joe have completed their basic merit badge requirements are addressing their project.  Austin, Greg and Michael are in the earlier stages.

Service Projects

On November 27 we will meet at UNC Hospital to help put up Christmas trees on the floors and in lobbies.  Meet at the main hospital lobby at 5:30 PM.  We should be finished about 8:00 PM.  Pizza will be provided by the hospital volunteer staff.
We will also consider a project working at the food bank in Raleigh.  Since BSA wants troops to take part in the Afghan Children's Fund fund raising, it was suggested that the boys get sponsors to contribute for their work at the Food Bank.  This way they raise money for the fund and work at the Food Bank.  More to follow on this project.

Scout-A-Rama

On December 8 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM will be at the Chapel Hill Legion Hall there will be a scout exposition.  Troops from the area will display tasks that represent what their troop does best.  In our case it will be camping.  Scouts should sign up for a block of time to man the display area.  Dave will be there the whole time but would like parents to sign up for blocks as well as the scouts so there are two adults available during the day.
