Troop Committee Meeting Minutes
Monday 09 November 2009
Attendees: Gregg Gerdau
Debbie Robertson
Cathy Parker
Meeting Minutes:
We approved the meeting minutes from 14 October 2009 without changes.
Advancement: Debbie Robertson reported that over 150 merit badges were awarded at the recent Court of Honor.
There was discussion that Chad Lynn is close to completion of his communications merit badge, and needs to turn in his blue card. Sam Abernathy, Chad Lynn and Christian Guilisano are close to advancement and just need their conference and board of review.
There was some concern that Bobby Scoggins, Michael Wolhgast and Michael Lee need to get moving on their advancement. Bobby and Michael W. still need their youth protection training. Jose Guilisano is in charge of the Òtrail to first classÓ and Gregg will talk to Jose to get these three new scouts under way.
No pins to scouts or parents were handed out at the court of honor. Debbie Robertson was unsure about the funds in the treasury, and decided to forego the pins since so many scouts had multiple advancements. Gregg mentioned that he would like to ÒcatchÓ up on those pins when Debbie is sure the money is in the account.
Scoutmaster Report: The scoutmaster is happy. Gregg mentioned that he is the new district training chair as of Òlast MondayÓ.
The scouts will be presented with a ÒsurveyÓ of merit badges they wish to pursue in the Spring and Summer, so merit badge counselors can start planning for upcoming badges. Cathy Parker will talk to Kim Harry about Emergency Preparedness. We may use Kim to help make the emergency kits, since she has all the materials (and she purchased them upfront and would likely want reimbursements), but the Orange County Health Dept has a Emergency Preparedness merit badge program, and Cathy will look into this for the Spring 2010.
Gregg needs a list of scouts who are at least 13 years of age for future high adventure programs. Debbie Robertson will try to get that information, even though she doesnÕt believe she has the individual scout birthdays.
Gregg needs to review several items with the boys at the 10Nov09 troop meeting, including ÒLight is RightÓ, selection of food for the backpacking trip, and to emphasize Òno cottonÓ. If it rains, the steep hiking trip will be cancelled and the troop will go to some alternative site at the last minute.
There was mention that this past Sunday, the phone chain failed. Gregg did not get his second call, and Debbie Robertson and Cathy ParkerÕs houses were not called about the upcoming Troop meeting.
Fundraising: The garage sale coming up at Rose LeeÕs house November 21st needs to be discussed at the troop 9 meeting 10Nov09 and the following week. Debbie Roberson will talk to Rose and give each boy a written request for donations. We recalled Rose mentioning that she would like one box of donations from each scout. Debbie will also find out from Rose where/when each boy can drop off the items for the garage sale. In addition to mentioning the garage sale at the troop meeting, Debbie will help ensure that an email goes out to all parents to find items for donations.
Treasurer Report: The treasurer was not present at the meeting. It was reiterated that the current method of reimbursing drivers for expenses incurred is currently working satisfactorily. However, all present were in agreement that any changes in methodology would be up to Dale Carey, the new treasurer.
New Business:
The Eagle Court of Honor for Dan Ripperton is November 21 1:30-3:30 in the old chapel, followed by a reception and slide show 3:30-4:30. All scouts will receive an invitation and are expected to come.
The 100th anniversary of Troop 9 is Sunday February 21st. We are hoping to find a parent to take
care of the party. Many people
have already been invited.
We will definitely need to consult with Jill Czajkowski for help since she is widely regarded as quite talented and capable in sponsoring parties.
We discussed the upcoming caving trip. Cathy Parker mentioned that this caving experience could make a feature article in Scouting or BoysÕ Life magazines. Gregg agreed it was unique enough and when we are sure the caving trip is on, we could let the magazines know about it. Gregg mentioned that typically, if the magazine is interested, they would assign a reporter to the trip.
Meeting adjourned at 8:10 pm.
