Parent's Committee Meeting

Minutes

May 6, 2003

In attendance: Nancy Barber, Tom Hock, Gayle Risk, John Risk, Luke Cathell, Dave Scocca, Alfred Avery, Lisa Ripperton, Dave Filpus - a quorum of at least seven people.

Prior Month minutes - Please review the minutes on the web site. We would like the notes to be as accurate as possible recording the troop's activities. Any corrections should be sent to Dave Filpus.

Treasurer's report - a current balance of $3,281.64 - unchanged since the April meeting. Luke Cathell added the good news that two Glaxo checks of $500 each have been received by the Council and will be directed to Troop 9 - Lisa Ripperton.

Tom Hock suggested that the troop consider purchasing a canopy type tent for the camporee type events that the boys attend. An estimated price would run between $50 and $200. John Risk offered to find out what is available and perhaps purchase a tent if he finds something appropriate.

Leadership changes -After summer camp, Tom Hock will become the scout master, Dave Filpus will chair the parent committee meetings and John Risk will be there to actively support us all.

We need an active Assistant Scout Master. Please let us know if you would like to participate.

Jesse Cathell has been elected Senior Patrol Leader.

Summer Camp-

John Risk is asking for parent participation. Having three adults in the camp is a tremendous help. Tom Hock expects to be available at the end of the week. Both Luke Cathell and Dave Scocca need to determine if and when they can help - but they would like to be there. John Risk has offered to fill in as needed.
The camp is asking for a list of attending adults and the fees two weeks prior to the camp.
Family night - one option is to eat in the dining hall or perhaps be given something to fix and eat at the camp site.
Tom Hock suggested that the Troop fund a hot dog type dinner and perhaps he or his wife could bring the dinner to camp.
There will be a separate email sent inviting families to attend camp on Thursday night. The camp fire will be at 8:00 on Thursday night and may include the OA call out. A closing camp fire will be held at 8:45 on Friday night.
If your son needs help with his uniform, please let us know. We are requested to wear full uniforms at the evening meals.
Swim test - we will plan on taking the swim test on the first day of camp.

Trips/Meetings -

Bike Trip - May 24 - 26. A Court of Honor campfire will be on held on the Kaufmanhaus hillside. Blankets are must appropriate as the hill is too steep for chairs. We expect the ceremony to begin around dusk - about 8:00 pm.

The bike route is from Black Mountain to Saralyn (near the Risk's). Directions have been posted on the web site.

Families are welcome to camp and perhaps canoe in the morning. Bug spray is a necessity.

Recruiting - NEXT WEEK'S MEETING - will be held at University Mall. Approximately 12 local troops may be represented. Full uniforms should be worn by each scout.

We are at a “critical” stage of having growing scouts and needing younger scouts for them to lead. We could easily use 8 to 12 new scouts and the additional parental support as well. Having an affiliation with a Cub Scout troop has advantages and disadvantages. We are a diverse group. By Christmas two of our 17 scouts will age out.

A suggestion is for our scouts to act as den chiefs reestablishing connections to the Cub Scout troops.

Subsequent Scout Meetings - a planning meeting for the older scouts will be held the week after the bike trip. The next few meetings will be directed towards summer camp.
