Prior meeting minutes
? approved.
Treasurer’s report
? Lisa Ripperton - balance as
of the November minutes $3,604.93 ? no change since then.Current
year dues for all participating scouts have been collected.
Organization ?
-
Robert Long’s position as charter
organization representative may be available. This
position requires that you be a member of the Chapel of the Cross..
-
Committee Chairman ? John Risk currently
holds this position through August. He
is offering his position if someone else is interested. John
is happy to stay on as chairman and will continue participating in the
troop whether or not he holds a position.
-
Please let the troop know if you have
an interest in either position.
Recruiting ?
-
Currently there are 16 scouts enrolled. Ideally
the troop could accommodate 24. A
maximum of 36 may be the most that we could handle. With
16 scouts participating, it is difficult to get enough adults for the outings. The
boys tend to see the same adults.
-
Suggestions/Concerns ? concession
stands or an activity that would increase the boy’s interest. We
will always be competing with the sports. A
target age of 11 to 14 would help the troop in the long run. Boys
over the age of 14 tend to lose interest and the demands of high school
activity take their time.
-
Why should a child choose troop 9? Higher
levels of adventure camping, backpacking, family participation.
-
Ways to gain the interest of others? Several
of the boys have offered to speak to Cub Scout troops. Newspapers
run the community service information columns. Scouts
could ask to speak on the local radio station. Direct
recruitment of friends is considered the best means. Recruiter
patches can be given to the scouts who bring others into the troop.
-
Possibly shorter outings can be planned
to get the younger boy’s interest. Although
we may lose the older boy’s participation. The
Duke Forest day hike or simply going to John Risk’s property could be considered. Limiting
the number of long trips may get more scouts to participate in the activities.
Next Meeting ?
-
Mike Byerley, District Executive for
Orange District will come to the next parent/committee meeting. He’ll
ask for support of the Friends of Scouting Campaign.
Upcoming Trips
?
-
Panther Creek ? 6 boys and 3 adults
have committed. Weather may
create bad driving conditions.
-
Caving trip ? a staff trip for those
age 14 and above, red bolo and senior level staff, possible date February
8th. Dave
will email the boys to get commitments.
-
Alternative activity for the younger
boys ? another scout troop has offered for our boys to attend a climbing
“lock in” February 14th from 11:00pm Friday until 8:00am Saturday. The
cost is expected to be $23 plus food. Tom
Hock has offered to help.
-
March trip - has been cancelled. The
original trip to the mountains took advantage of the extended weekend,
which is now a snow make up day. A possible alternative ? Hanging Rock.
-
April camporee at Chest Nut Ridge
Elections ?
-
Michael Barber has been elected as
senior patrol leader, which leaves the position of quartermaster vacant.
