Chapel Hill, NC

This meeting of the Parent Committee of Troop 9 was called to order by Chairman John Risk at 7:15 PM.

Those in attendance were:

Dave Filpus
Judy Quay (Froelich)
John Risk
Dave Scocca
George Painter
Alfred Avery
Robert Mandeville

Prior Minutes

Minutes of April 9, 2002 were read by Judy Quay, and approved as written. A $10.00 correction to a
math error was made to the November 2001 minutes.

Treasurer's Report

John Risk gave a summary in Ed's absence. The troop account balance as of 4/11/2002 was $2943.40. National has raised dues by $3.00 / scout. If dues are kept at $50.00 per scout next year, the troop will experience a minor shortfall from our normal operations budget. Some discussion took place of different levels of troop fund-raising: required fund-raising for total or partial troop program financing vs. optional fund-raising if the boys wanted to earn their merit badges for salesmanship (which would be handled by the Advancement Committee) or contribute to District.

In order to limit the role of fund-raising to badge-earning or helping out District, the committee voted to increase dues, leaving the amount ($55 or $60) to be decided in an email vote. A scout's economic standing will not be a limiting factor.

Troop Overview

John indicated that this document has been posted on the web for the past month. It allows both current and prospective parents to see who we are and what we do.

John explained that the sources of funds break down approximately as follows:

 20% comes from parents

  5% comes from Glaxo

12% comes from Chapel of the Cross

 62% comes from leaders

John called for a motion to post this document on the web. Judy so moved. Dave S. seconded. The motion was carried unanimously.

Summer Camp 6/23-6/26/2000 Camp Durant

In order to have 2 adults present for the duration, split shifts will need to be arranged. Volunteers for
partial shifts are:

Robert M. (1-2 days)

John R. (1 day/as many nights as needed)

Jeff (perhaps 1 day)

Tom H. will go out on Friday and spend the night. Dave F. will check on the availability of tents and sites (3 troops are scheduled at 9's site, including 9). The week is full -- reservations are closed. There are female showers next to the site (at the health facility) in the event some female chaperones might be interested.

Dave F. will send out reminders to parents still owing money. Health forms are only needed for adults if they wish to participate in aquatics activities.

There was some discussion of ensuring adequate supervision of a special needs camper in the absence of his father. Cell phone coverage was also discussed.

Advancement Report

George reported that Wendy has received the merit badge survey results and wanted to know how to proceed in utilizing them. John indicated that 2 badges/semester has worked well in the past.

"Eagle Eye" - Eagle Scout Status

Since the troop has 3 scouts who are all in some advanced stage of eagle readiness, the parents of the 3 scouts will need to discuss logistics for a triple Court of Honor vs deferring one or two scouts until later.

Northern Tier 7/5 ? 7/13

Since one scout has dropped out, there is currently one opening for this trip.

Other New Business

It was pointed out that two long-standing troop policies have recently been suffering particular neglect and abuse. The most notable is the troop policy which forbids electronic devices on all overnight trips. Reminders will start being sent on camping detail sheets to assure future compliance, as the presence of such devices compromises the camping experience.

The other troop policy which is being largely ignored is the one banning soda pop on overnight scout trips. There was some discussion of possibly acquiring and storing water filters for patrol use, to facilitate compliance. Further discussion was deferred until after a decision has been made on dues for next year.

Another topic deferred until later was whether or not to schedule a rock climbing trip. The scouts who participated in the trip to the CH Rec Dept wall [Correction : Vertical Edge Climbing Center .. SM] did well at it and have asked to incorporate a trip into next year's schedule.

John adjourned the meeting at 8:17 PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Judy
