Virginia Creeper Bike Trail

Description

 

          We will be camping at the Beartree Campground near Damascus, VA off Highway 58. We will bike down the Virginia Creeper Trail from the Whitetop Trail Head down to Damascus on Saturday morning. It's liable to be cold, and maybe wet too.


 

Friday

Depart from the Subway at Timberlyne shopping center

Load into Campsite/set up

 

 

Short Hike around site if time permits

Leave campsite toward Whitetop

Head out from Whitetop Trail Head

Head back to Campsite from Damascus

Personal Equipment

          Pack for potentially cold, wet weather. See the troop equipment list for details.

          Check your bike and your bike supplies (extra tubes, change kit, chain lubricant, pump, helmet, etcetera). Maybe gloves for the trail.

          Make sure your brakes are up to snuff.

 

Food and Group Equipment

          Food and equipment will be coordinated at the troop meetings by patrol for the scouts. Adults and leaders need to coordinate as well.

Water

         Reliable water is available at camp. Be sure to have 2 liters of canteen space for the Saturday bike trip.

 

 

 

Directions/ Driving route:

Driving time should be about four and a half hours, not counting lunch.

 

         I-40 West to exit #206 (US 421 North)

         Merge onto I-40 Business Route West/ US 421 North

         Merge onto US 52 North at Exit #6B

         Merge onto I-74 at exit #140 (on the left toward I-77 Wytheville)

         Merge onto I-77 North via exit #5 toward Wytheville

         Merge onto I-81 South via the exit on the left toward Wytheville

         take exit #29 at Glade Spring

         turn left at bottom of ramp and go about ¼ mile to stop sign.

         Turn right onto US 11, then immediately left onto SR 91.

         Follow SR 91 for 13 miles to Damascus.

         Go east on US 58 for about 7 miles to Beartree entrance on left (paved FS 837).

          From the entrance off US 58 to the entrance station is approximately 1 mile. The group camping loops are approximately ½ mile from the entrance station.
