Troop 9
Bike Trip, Court of Honor and Campout
Kaufmanhaus
May 27-29 2005

The bike trip will be to and from Kaufmanhaus (the Risk's place). The bike route is at <www.t9ch.org/Docs/04-05/Chatham_County_route.html>  and a map is at <www.t9ch.org/Docs/04-05/ChathamBikeMap.jpg>.

There is a "food fee" of $12 per scout.  Gayle and John Risk will arrange or purchase certain meals.  Fee should be paid upon arrival at camp.

Schedule

Friday....  come as early as you wish on Friday afternoon.  Eat before you leave, but bring your own pre-made foil pack dinner to cook over a campfire in the camping area.  Dinner time would be late, probably 7:00 or 8:00 PM.  Plan on NO COOKING UTENSILS.  Eat out of the foil pack, so NO CLEAN-UP REQUIRED.

Saturday Morning....  Get up early (6:00 AM) and start bike trip.  This will put us through town before any traffic.  Stop at Al's for breakfast.  We will sit outside at the 2 picnic tables and eat Sausage & Egg biscuits paid for out of the "food fee"  Gayle and I will have coffee and juice for everybody.

Saturday Noon ....  Cold cut lunch (Salami & Cheese on tortilla bread) purchased by Gayle and me out of the "food fee"

Saturday Evening...  Pot luck Dinner before the court of honor.  Parents should bring enough food to feed themselves and a couple extra.  That way there will be plenty of food if some parents do not come.  Drinks provided out of "food fee"

Sunday Morning...  Cook Breakfast over a fire.  Bacon and Eggs & bread, will be provided out of the "food fee".   Boys will cook their own eggs on cast iron skillets provided.  Bacon for all will be cooked by me.  Make a bacon & egg sandwich and eat it on a paper towel (provided).  For Clean-Up, skillets will be thrown into the fire and the egg and grease will burn off..... NO WASHING.

Sunday Noon....  Lunch at home.

NOTES:  Except for Friday night foil pack, and Saturday night Pot Luck...  all food and drink is purchased from the $12 food fee charged to each scout.  This fee is designed to also provide for the camping & biking adults at no additional cost.  Drinks will all be "bulk" quantity gator-ade or some other mixed powered drink, coffee, tea, or water.  If anyone feels the need for soda, they need to bring it themselves.  everyone should bring their own cup or water bottle to refill for drinks.  We will not be providing throw away paper or plastic cups.  Coffee mugs will be available.

Tents.....

We can set up the new canopy (with walls) and anybody who wishes can bring a sleeping bag and a ground cloth, and sleep inside.  For those who want either privacy or peace & quiet (or both), bring a personal or troop tent.

Cooking & eating...

It will not be necessary to bring stoves or fuel, as we will be cooking over campfires. Plates and utensils are not required unless you prefer the Sunday morning breakfast on a plate instead of making a sandwich.  -- DO bring a water bottle or cup to have with you for drinks, both at camp and on the bike trip.

Directions

Here are the latest directions:
  • From Chapel Hill, Go South on 15-501.
  • Cross the Haw River and go 1.4 miles to Russell Chapel Road.  It's a major road going to the right, tucked in the middle of 'road construction barrels'.  If you come to a traffic light, you have gone a half mile too far.
  • Turn right onto Russell Chapel Road and go 1.1 miles to 'Saralyn Rd' and turn right.  It's a gravel road with a normal small green street sign.  There is a small trailer park on Russell Chapel Road, just before you get to Saralyn.
  • Go to the end of Saralyn Road (about a mile) and Turn right onto Quartz Hill Road.
  • Continue about 100 feet to the fork in the road at the Russian Sign, and turn left.
  • Shortly, at the bottom of the hill, you will see a small cluster of mailboxes, and a road to the right.  That's our driveway.  As you turn, look to the right for a small sign with "146" on it.  The Driveway is about a half mile long.  About midway, you will pass a new road going left up the hill.  Don't take the new road, but continue on to our place.  As you come up the hill, the red guest cottage is on the right and our house a little further on the left.
