The hike is the southern section (9.15) miles of the Dennis Mountain section of the Uwharrie National Trail in the Uwharrie National Forest from the Yates Place trail head 3 miles west of downtown Troy hiking south to the southern terminus on NC 24/27 10 miles southwest of Troy. The trip will be under full pack carrying all food with water available along the trail.
The original trail, conceived by Joe Moffitt and constructed with the help of his and other Boy Scout troops in the mid 1970's. In 1980, the trail was designated a National Recreation Trail and has been maintained by the National Forest Service and local Boy Scout troops since.
The climb is moderate; typical ascents and descents are two to
three hundred
feet per half mile with occasional climbs of up to three hundred feet
on
as little as a quarter mile.

See the troop's equipment list for details. Pack for a simple overnight campout. Assume local extremes of weather; i.e., pack clothes for 25 deg. F. to 85 deg. F. Send some combination of sunscreen, hats and light-weight, long-sleeved shirts if sun protection is an issue.
Food (except Saturday lunch) and group equipment will be
coordinated at
the troop meetings by patrol. Sunday lunch may be left in the cars.
There are documented water points along the trail. Start full. Bring a pump or water purification tablets.
