Cape Fear River / Raven Rock State Park
Troop 9 Canoeing Camp-out
27-28 September 2003
Description
The trip is an two day canoe trip on the Cape Fear River
with an overnight camp-out at the canoe campsites at Raven Rock State
Park. Noncanoeists can hike less than two miles from the parking lot in
the state park to the campsite for the camp-out.
The canoe trip starts at the Buckhorn Dam near Corinth NC. There are
three sets of rapids that need to be portaged around: Buckhorn Rapids
(see map),
Lanier Falls and Northington Falls (the Fish Traps) on the first day.
After passing the Raven Rock cliffs, looming several hundred feet above
the river, the group camps at Raven Rock State Park. The second day has
no rapids to portage, The trip ends at the Wildlife Access, east of
Lillington.
Water Activity and Equipment
Only boys with BSA swimmer and canoeing experience are
allowed to paddle. Boys with BSA swimmer may ride in the middle of a
canoe. All will wear PFDs at all times.

Personal Equipment
Overnight equipment in watertight bags, swimming suit, sun
screen, insect repellent.
Food and Group Equipment
Food (except Saturday lunch) and group equipment will be
coordinated
at the troop meetings by patrol. Two meals, Saturday supper and Sunday
breakfast are prepared and eaten at the camp-site. Lunch Saturday and
Sunday are eaten on the river.
Messages and Emergency Contact
Telephone contact may be tried; call 593-0290. Much of the
area has poor cell phone coverage.
Water
Water bottles have to be accessible in the canoe. Water is available at
the Canoe campsite.
Canoe Shuttle
Noncanoeing drivers shuttle the cars
from the put-in at Buckhorn Dam to the parking lot at Raven Rock State
Park on Saturday and from Rave Rock to Lillington on Sunday.
