Description

The trip is in three parts: a 36 mile bike trip from Blackwood Mountain to Saralyn near Pittsboro, the troop Spring Court of Honor in the evening and an overnight campout at Kaufmanhaus. The bike trip winds its way through southwestern Orange County through dairy lands into northwestern Chatham County south of the Haw River. Cars will accompany the riders to accommodate equipment problems and tired bikers. Troop families are invited to come for a campfire Court of Honor on the banks of the creek below Kaufmanhaus. The troop will spend the night camping in the woods above the house. Weather and equipment permitting, an excursion down to the Haw River for canoeing will be the activity Sunday morning.

Personal Equipment

• Bike Trip: Bike, Helmet, Bag lunch, comfortable clothing, water bottle, SUN SCREEN, Bike tire repair kit.
• Camping Trip: Car Camping equipment, swimming suit, more sun screen. We will be using the troop tents, so nobody has to bring tents.

Uniforms

Class A uniform is needed for the Court of Honor.

Food and Group Equipment

Food (except Saturday lunch) and group equipment will be coordinated at the troop meetings by patrol. Three meals, Saturday supper and Sunday breakfast and lunch, are needed.

Water bottles refills will be available from the car on the bike trip. Water is available at the house.
 

Driving Routes To Blackwood Mountain From Chapel Hill, take NC-86 (Airport Road) north to the intersection with Mt. Sinai Road on the right and Mill House Road on the left, just before the railroad tracks at Blackwood Station. Turn left and take Mill House Road under the I-40 bridges, then just after the road curves left, Blackwood Mountain road is to the right, next to the farm. The mailboxes are on the right. To Saralyn and Kaufmanhaus Take US-15/501 from Chapel Hill south past the Haw River bridge. About a mile past the bridge is Russell Chapel Road, which branches right just before a pottery. Take Russell Chapel Road 1.3 miles to Saralyn Road, which is a small gravel road to the right. The mailboxes are the left a short distance in. Take Saralyn 0.8 miles to Quartz Hill Road, a gravel road to the right. Take Quartz Hill a couple of hundred yards until the road splits. Take the left split and then take the next right. Kaufmanhaus is at the end of the road. Park in the driveway. The campfire is below the house and can be seen from the porch. To camp, hike uphill a couple of hundred yards to the campsites.
