Boy Scout Troop 9
Dave Scocca

Boy Scout Troop 9 is a youth ministry outreach of the Chapel of the Cross. Founded more than 50 years ago, Troop 9 is one of the oldest Boy Scout troops in the Occoneechee Council. The troop engages boys ranging in age from 11 to 18 and offers a wide range of outdoor camping and wildernessactivities along with practical education and community service projects. Boys begin by reaching the first rank of Tenderfoot and can progress upward to reach the ultimate goal of Eagle Scout. We are proud that Joe Johnston completed the Eagle Scout award during 2003.

Activities during the last year have included camping and backpacking trips, including backpacking in Shenandoah, a bike trip through Orange and Chatham counties, and a week of summer camp at Camp Cherokee in Yanceyville. We will be returning to Camp Cherokee this summer duringthe second full week of July.

Troop 9 is led by Scoutmaster Tom Hock and Committee Chairman Dave Filpus. Other committee members include Lisa Ripperton (Treasurer), John Risk (past Chairman), Dave Scocca, and Sankey Blanton.

Troop 9 is actively looking for new members. We meet on Tuesday nights, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. downstairs in the Yates wing. Boys 10½ years old and older are invited to attend. We would particularly like to encourage boys who will soon complete the Webelos program to consider continuing their Scouting in Troop 9. For more information, contact Tom Hock (919-960-9294).
