South Mountains State Park
Troop 9 Hike and Campout
19-20 October 2002

Description

The trip will be to the South Mountains State Park south of Morganton, N.C. off NC-18. Activities will include day hikes to High Shoals Falls and Chestnut Knob.  On the way out, we will check on the status of trees that the troop planted as a service project in 1999. Weather is frequently available in abundance; pack for either wet or cold weather.

Saturday 19 Oct.  7:00 a.m.  Depart from Chapel of the Cross
11:00 a.m.  Meet at South Mountains SP, Ranger's Office
11:00 a.m.  Hike to the group campground
noon Lunch
afternoon Day hike to High Shoals Falls
evening Overnight at the group campground
Sunday morning Day Hike on the Chestnut Knob Trail
1:00 p.m. Depart for Chapel Hill
5:00 p.m. Arrive in Chapel Hill, Chapel of the Cross

Personal Equipment

Pack for potentially cold, wet weather. See the troop equipment list for details.

Food and Group Equipment

Food (except Saturday lunch) and equipment will be coordinated at the troop meetings by patrol. Pack a bag lunch for Saturday. Pack a lunch for Sunday that requires minimum preparation.

The times that the troop starts for home and expects to arrive may be attained by calling 967-8963. The Scoutmaster's cell phone is 919-593-0290. Cell phone coverage is spotty. Leave a message.

Driving Route

Estimated travel time is three  and three quarters hours from Chapel Hill. A map of the route from Morganton is linked.
I-40, NC-18, SR-1913, SR-1924 (Old NC18), SR-1901, SR1-904. The exit from I40 is #105.
Drivers will leave Chapel Hill Saturday morning at 7:00 a.m. We will meet at the park ranger's office around 11:00 a.m .

Water

Reliable water is available at camp. Be sure to have 2 liters of canteen space for the Saturday day hike.
