Troop 9 Beach Hike
8-10 November 2002

Description

The trip will be a day hike on the Core Banks, which stretch from Cape Lookout north to the ghost town of Portsmouth. The troop is staying at a beach house on Harker's Island. The troop will take a ferry to the banks, go on a guided tour of the historic section of the island and  spend some time exploring. This trip provides the opportunity to experience seashore nature. It is also an investigatory trip for a future camping trip on the Banks.

Schedule

 
Friday 8 Nov.  6:00 p.m.  Depart from Chapel of the Cross
10:30 p.m.  Arrive at the beach house on Harker's Island - Overnight
Saturday 9 Nov. 8:15 a.m.  Ferry to Cape Lookout
9:00 am Tour of the Cape Lookout Area 
noon Lunch while hiking the Core Banks
4:15 p. m. Ferry back to Harker's Island - Overnight
Sunday 10 Nov. 9:30 a.m. Depart Harker's Island for Chapel Hill
noon Lunch at fast food restaurant
2:30 p.m. Return to Chapel Hill, Chapel of the Cross

Fee

The cost for the trip is twenty dollars for youth and ten dollars for adults, to help cover the expense of the ferry, tour and food for the trip. Return this form with the fee by the November 5 troop meeting.

Personal Equipment

Sleeping bag, change of clothes, sunscreen, bug repellent,  day pack for lunch and water. Dress for sunny ot windy, cold weather.

Water

Have 2 liters of canteen space for the Saturday day hike, which can be filled at the lighthouse.

Food

Saturday breakfast, lunch and dinner and Sunday breakfast is provided by the troop from the trip fee. Saturday lunch is prepared at the cottage and carried over to the island. Sunday lunch is at a fast food restaurant at the boy's own expense ( $5-$10 ).
