Campout at Camp Durant
Boy Scout Troop 9
13-15 September 2002
Our first campout for the year is at Camp Durant, the summer camp that
the troop attended this summer. This outing will be a mini-summer camp,
with an emphasis on summer camp type activities. Activities may include,
subject to weather and equipment:
-
Climbing Tower, for those 13 years and older
-
Waterfront, including swimming, canoeing and a kayak, and to pass
rank swimming requirements.
-
Fishing, for those who took Fishing merit badge at camp, but did not catch
the required fish
-
Wilderness Survival merit badge shelter and overnight, for those who took
Wilderness Survival at camp, when the overnight shelter was stormed out.
-
A five mile hike around the camp's lakes, for the Second Class hike requirement
Our normal site (5) is being used for training this weekend, so we are
staying at Site 7, which is between the climbing tower and the waterfront.

Driving Directions
Take US-15/501 from Chapel Hill through Pittsboro and Sanford, then NC
24 through Carthage. From 1.3 miles west of the courthouse in Carthage
turn left onto Bethlehem Church Road, SR 1261 with a sign for the Occoneechee
camps. Go 7.2 miles to stop sign crossing with SR 1210 and begin to watch
for Camp Durant 1.4 miles on left. Take the camp road to the other end
of the parking lot. Just to the left of the parking lot is a gated road
into the camp. If that gate is open, we can drive into the camp. Otherwise,
we will have to walk.
To get to Site 7, follow the main road from the gate to the activity
field, turn right and continue around the activity field and turn left
to pass by the climbing tower. The road turns right at the tower. The entrance
to Site 7 is on the right down the road beyond the tower. The waterfront
is on the same road farther down.
