Driving Routes
To Blackwood Mountain
From Chapel Hill, take NC-86 (Airport Road) north to the intersection
with Mt. Sinai Road on the right and Mill House Road on the left, just
before the railroad tracks at Blackwood Station. Turn left and take Mill
House Road under the I-40 bridges, then just after the road curves left,
Blackwood Mountain road is to the right, next to the farm. The mailboxes
are on the right.
To Saralyn and Kaufmanhaus
Take US-15/501 from Chapel Hill south past the Haw River bridge. About
a mile past the bridge is Russell Chapel Road, which branches right just
before a pottery. Take Russell Chapel Road 1.3 miles to Saralyn Road, which
is a small gravel road to the right. The mailboxes are the left a short
distance in.
Take Saralyn 0.8 miles to Quartz Hill Road, a gravel road to the right.
Take Quartz Hill a couple of hundred yards until the road splits. Take
the left split and then take the next right. Kaufmanhaus is at the end
of the road. Park in the driveway. The campfire is below the house and
can be seen from the porch. To camp, hike uphill a couple of hundred yards
to the campsites.
