Boy Scout Troop 9 Robert Long

Boy Scout Troop 9 is a youth ministry outreach of the Chapel of the Cross. Founded
more than 50 years ago, Troop 9 is one of the oldest Boy Scout troops in the Occoneechee
Council. The troop engages boys ranging in age from 11 to 18 and offers a wide range of
outdoor camping and wilderness activities along with practical education and community
service projects. Boys begin by reaching the first rank of Tenderfoot and can progress
upward to reach the ultimate goal of Eagle Scout.

Activities during the last year have included camping trips to various locations
including the Uwharrie National Forest, Camp Durant, South Mountain State Park and Cape
Lookout. Senior boys participate in an annual caving trip which last year explored a ëwildí
cave along the North Carolina/Tennessee border. Last summer, Troop 9 scouts participated
in a High Adventure activity that involved a one-week backpacking and canoe trip along the
Northern Tier of Minnesota. A week-long scout camp is offered in late June of each year
for all scouts.

The adult staff of Troop 9 includes Scout Master Dave Filpus, Assistant Scout Master
Tom Hock and Committee Chairman John Risk. Troop 9 meets every Tuesday night from
78:30 p.m. in the Yates wing. Boys from age 101/2 are invited to attend. For information,
please contact Dave Filpus at 919-967-8963. For additional information, visit the troop
