Itinerary Uwharrie National Forest Troop 9 Hike and Campout 19-20 January 2002
Description
The hike is the full length (12.31) miles of the Dutchman's Creek Trail
in the Uwharrie National Forest from the Yates Place trail head 3 miles
west of downtown Troy hiking south to the souhern terminus on NC 24/27
10 miles southwest of Troy. The trip will be under full pack carrying all
food with water available along the trail.
In the 1970's, the Dutchman's Creek Trail was built to complement the Uwharrie
National Recreation Trail in the Wood Run area of the National Forest.
The Uwharrie and the Dutchman criss-cross to form a figure eight. The Dutchman
tends to run more on ridgelines than along creeks as it works its way through
the area.
As a reference point, this portion of the Uwharrie is approximately sixteen
miles south and very slightly west of Asheboro.
The climb is moderate; typical ascents and descents are two to three hundred
feet per half mile with occasional climbs of up to three hundred feet on
as little as a quarter mile. The Dutchman offers steeper climbs than the
Uwharrie. Climbing down into the Little Creek valley is memorable because
the trail crosses an extensive rock outcropping.
