Troop 9 Bike Trip and Campout

Description

The trip is in two parts: a 52 mile bike trip from Hyco Lake to Williamsboro and an overnight campout at the Boy Scout W.D. Campbell Scout Reservation on Kerr Lake near Presbyterian Point. The bike trip follows NC Bike Route 4 across Hyco Lake, through Roxboro and farmland along the northern border of North Carolina. Parents are invited for a Sunday picnic lunch. Cars will accompany the riders to accommodate equipment problems and tired bikers.

Arrive	3:00 p.m.	St. Johns Church, Williamsboro, .2 mi west on SR1329 from intersection with NC39, approx. 6 mi N of Henderson
Pickup	3:00 - 4:00 p.m.	Ferry bikes and riders to W.D. Campbell Scout Reservation
Overnight	11 May	W.D. Campbell Scout Reservation
Picnic	11:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m 12 May	W.D. Campbell Scout Reservation
Departure	Afternoon 12 May	W.D. Campbell Scout Reservation

Personal Equipment

Bike Trip: Bike, Helmet, Bag lunch, comfortable clothing, water bottle, SUN SCREEN, Bike tire repair kit.
Camping Trip: Overnight equipment, swimming suit, more sun screen. We will be using the troop tents, so nobady has to bring tents.

Food and Group Equipment

Food (except Saturday lunch) and group equipment will be coordinated at the troop meetings by patrol. Two meals, Saturday supper and Sunday breakfast, are needed. Lunch is to be a family picnic.

Water

Water bottles refills will be available from the car on the bike trip. Water is now available at the W.D. Campbell lodge.

Driving Routes

To Hyco Lake

Estimated travel time is one hour
NC-86 north from Hillsborough to NC-119
NC-119 north to NC-57
NC-57 east to Hyco Lake Marina, just past first lake bridge

To Kerr Lake

Estimated travel time is one and a half hours.
15-501 north to I85
I85 north to Henderson and NC39

To the church:

NC39 6.8 mi. north to SR1329 (in Williamsboro), left then 0.2 mile to St. John's Church on the right.

To camp:

NC39 13.0 mi. north to Rock Springs Church, SR1356, turn right to Henderson Point
SR1356 3.1 mi. becomes VA717 at state line (change in pavement)
VA717 0.7 mi. toVA826, sharp left
VA826 ~ .5 mi to gate to W.D. Campbell on right. You will need the pass code to get past the gate.
Follow dirt road in to old cinder block Lodge. There are two camping areas, one to the left at the lodge and one to the right. We will determine which one the day of the trip.
