Boy Scout Troop 9 Annual Report 2001
This year finds Troop 9 with a new emphasis on canoeing and climbing in
addition to the backpacking that has been the primary focus of the past
few years. The troop is preparing a crew to go on a week-long canoe trek
in July 2002 at the Northern Tier Canoe Base in the Boundary Waters on
Minnesota. The leadership has been trained in water and climbing skills
and safety to broaden the experience for the boys.
In October, the troop dedicated a memorial display case to the memory
of Lyman Ripperton, our late Scoutmaster.
Advancement
During 2001, at least one boy earned each of the ranks offered by the Boy
Scouts. Two boys (Michael Clarke-Pearson and Michael Quinn Potter) were
awarded the Eagle Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Boys Scouts
of America. The troop attended Camp Durant in July, where 10 boys earned
more than thirty merit badges.
Service
For community service, the troop assisted with parking and clean up at
the church's ABC sale and set up Christmas trees in the public areas of
University Hospital.
Outings
The troop continued its traditions with winter backpacking trips to the
Uwharrie National Forest, Crowder's Mountain State Park and along the Appalachian
Trail in the Mount Rogers area and a springtime 50 mile bike ride. The
troop had two canoeing weekends to prepare for overnight canoe trips during
2002. The troop capped off the year with a caving trip in Morell's
Cave in Tennessee in December.
