Caving
Roan Mountain State Park
1-3 December 2000

 

Description

The trip is to cabins in the state park overnight Friday and Saturday. During the day Saturday we will be exploring a cave, Grindstone, with spelunker, Bill Mattocks.  On Sunday, Bill is willing to take us to another nearby cave before returning home.

Schedule

Depart: 4:00pm, Friday 1 December 2000, Chapel of the Cross.

Arrive:     Approximately 9:00 pm, Roan Mountain State Park.  Sleep in reserved cabins.

Activity:   Caving

Leave:      Approximately 2:00 pm Sunday.

Pickup:     7:00 pm Sunday, Chapel of the Cross.

Personal Equipment

All linens and cookware provided.  Each scout should have clothing for a wet  50-55 degrees.  Clothing and shoes may never look the same again.  Pack accordingly.  Wool sox recommended.  In small pack (eg. hip pack or sack) have: one large black plastic bag, two sources of light, extra batteries, water bottle and high energy snacks.  Knee pads are optional.  Helmets and helmet lights are to be provided. Dry clothing and shoes for after caving both days.

Food

Each scout should bring a bag meal for Friday night and Saturday lunch in or near the cave.  Saturday breakfast and dinner, as well as Sunday breakfast will be prepared as a troop.  Bring $10 to cover costs.  Any excess will be put in troop treasury, any deficiency covered by same.  Also bring $ for fast food (at the discretion of the driver) on the way home.

Driving Route

West on I-40 to Winston Salem.  North on 421 to Boone.  North on 321 to Hampton, TN.  East on 19E.  South on 143 to Roan Mountain State Park.
