Boy Scout Troop 9 Annual Report 2000
This year was a year of transition for Troop 9. In September, our scoutmaster,
Lyman Ripperton, passed away after seventeen years as Scoutmaster. Taking
over the job of Scoutmaster is David Filpus, who has been Lymanís assistant
for two and a half years.
Advancement
Three boys (Jonathan Ripperton, Brian Garlington, Ryan Erickson) were awarded
the Eagle Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Boys Scouts of America.
One other boy (Michael Clarke-Pearson) completed the Eagle Award, but it
was not formally awarded until 2001. Four Eagles in one year is the best
year in the troopís history. Other boys earned Life, Star, First and Second
Class ranks. The troop attended Camp Durant in June, where six boys earned
more than twenty merit badges.
Service
For community service, the troop assisted with parking at the churchís
ABC sale, cleared trees fallen during an ice storm at Camp Durant and set
up Christmas trees in the public areas of University Hospital.
Outings
The troop continued its traditions with winter backpacking trips to the
Uwharrie and Joyce Kilmer National Forests and a springtime 50-mile bike
ride. The highlight of the year was a caving trip in Grindstaff Cave in
Tennessee in December.
